FigCraft vs Sketch

Platform, offline work, prototyping and handoff, compared with Sketch's public homepage and the FigCraft README. No winner is declared.

FigCraft is an open-source, clean-room interface design tool written in pure Rust, currently in early alpha, and it is not Figma. Sketch describes itself as a toolkit made by designers, for designers, with a macOS editor. The comparison covers where each tool runs, how each handles files and offline work, and what to test before any move.

Name note: FigCraft on this page means the ArtCraft interface design app. It is not Figma, not the .fig file format and not the fruit.

What to verify

  1. Check the platform first. FigCraft runs on Windows and Linux as well as macOS. The Sketch homepage describes a macOS editor and a macOS version requirement, so confirm which machines your team uses.
  2. Test your own Sketch-era files. The FigCraft README does not list Sketch files among its formats. Export a file to SVG or PDF, then reopen the result in FigCraft before you plan a move.
  3. Check the transitions and overlays your prototypes use. FigCraft lists connections, triggers and transitions. Sketch lists Smart Animate and overlays. Build one flow in each tool to see the differences.
  4. Review the sharing model before you upload. Share ▸ Online stores the file on a server that is not end-to-end encrypted. Sketch's preview and workspace features follow Sketch's own terms, which you can read on sketch.com.

Who this comparison is for

Use this page if you are deciding which tool to test first for interface work and you already have a real file to try. Read the FigCraft entries next to the Sketch entries, then check the primary sources on the day you decide. The sources are the authority on current releases, licences and terms.

Questions readers ask

Is FigCraft a Sketch alternative?

The two tools cover some of the same design work, but they are different products. FigCraft is an open-source interface design tool in early alpha from the ArtCraft team. Sketch is a product from Sketch B.V. with a macOS editor. This page does not say either one replaces the other.

Can FigCraft work offline, like Sketch?

Yes. FigCraft works offline by default, with no account and no telemetry, and the Sketch homepage also describes offline work. Sharing a file online needs a server, and FigCraft's default public server stores files without end-to-end encryption.

Does FigCraft open Sketch files?

The FigCraft README does not list Sketch files among its supported formats. It lists its own .figcraft archives, SVG, PNG, JPG, WebP and PDF for import and export, and .fig files on a best-effort basis. Export your work to SVG or PDF and test the result.
